Epigenetics is a branch of biology that studies both hereditary and reversible changes in gene activity brought about by the environment and our behaviour. It shows that 85%* of our genes are influenced by our lifestyle and behaviour, while only 15%* are changed by the passing of time.

The science of the eyes

To assess the impact of epigenetics on the eye area, Clarins Research has, for the first time, produced a comprehensive genetic map of the eye area of two identical twins with different lifestyles. The unprecedented results show that an unbalanced lifestyle significantly exacerbates wrinkles, the colour of dark circles and puffiness.

On average:

• 17% more wrinkles on the glabella
• 23% increase in crow’s feet
• 14% increase in under-eye wrinkles
• 10% increase in dark circle colour intensity
• 19% more puffiness

Epigenetic ageing therefore makes the eye area appear 4 years older.

At the cellular level, it has also been shown that certain key genes associated with skin youthfulness – including LOXL1, which contributes to the maturing and quality of elastic fibres, which are particularly important for the delicate area around the eyes – can be suppressed by environmental and lifestyle factors

Double anti-ageing innovation

To defy the effects of time and bolster the eye area’s resistance to environmental factors, Clarins Research, after studying 908 plants, has identified marjoram extract (organic plant) as an epigenetic ally capable of neutralising 98%* of certain environmentally induced epigenetic indicators while also stimulating gene activity that’s essential for the eye contour’s youthful appearance.

It’s combined with the iconic turmeric extract, which helps to reduce the effects of natural ageing by sustaining effective cellular communication and stimulating the five vital functions (regeneration, oxygenation, protection, hydration and nutrition). Niacinamide, horse chestnut escin and plant-based caffeine have also been selected for their effects on pigmented (brown) and vascular (bluish) dark circles, as well as puffiness.
